The Department of Health in the Negros Island Region has documented a concerning rise in fireworks-related injuries, totaling 96 cases from December 21 to January 2. The majority of these incidents, 62 in total, involved minors. Negros Occidental reported the highest number of cases at 59, while Negros Oriental and Siquijor had 15 and 2 cases respectively. The injuries ranged from 64 cases of burns or blasts without amputation, 26 eye injuries, two incidents involving both blasts and eye injuries, and four cases necessitating amputation.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out in a residential and boarding house in Dumaguete City on the evening of January 2. The fire, which started at the boarding house, also caused partial damage to a nearby appliance center in the downtown area. Fire Officer 3 Michael Brian Culi from the Bureau of Fire Protection reported no injuries from the fire, which was brought under control within 30 minutes of being reported at around 10 p.m. The initial damage is estimated at PHP 500,000, with ongoing investigations to determine the cause and final damage assessment.
