In response to the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on December 9, 2024, the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD-7) has been actively providing relief to affected families. As of January 1, 2025, DSWD-7 has successfully distributed 11,888 family food packs and 5,990 non-food items, with the total aid amounting to PHP18.1 million. Shalaine Marie Lucero, the regional director of DSWD-7, confirmed these figures on Friday.
The immediate response to the eruption saw the evacuation of families within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano, facilitated by the Canlaon City local government. Currently, 1,805 families are housed in 10 evacuation centers set up by the local authorities, while an additional 646 families are staying with relatives or friends and are being monitored regularly.
Alongside food packs, the non-food items provided include family and sleeping kits, hygiene kits, and family tents. Furthermore, 3,250 displaced families have received cash assistance, ranging from PHP2,000 to PHP3,000 per family. Tonyson Luther Lee, vice chairperson of the Quick Response Team, praised the dedication of the staff and volunteers during these challenging times.
