Philippine Government Vows Justice for Murdered Filipino Worker in Kuwait

·

The Philippine government, through the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), has pledged to pursue justice for a Filipino worker killed in Kuwait. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized the government’s commitment during a recent media briefing, stating that the primary suspect is currently detained and under investigation by Kuwaiti authorities. A legal representative from the Philippines is actively monitoring the case to ensure the suspect’s prosecution and the attainment of justice.

The victim, who had been employed in Kuwait for five years, had recently switched employers. Her last communication with her family occurred in October, after which she was reported missing. It wasn’t until December 28 that her body was discovered, prompting an investigation that revealed the suspect’s prior criminal history in Kuwait. The motive behind the crime remains unclear, but Cacdac assured that the victim’s remains would be repatriated once investigations conclude.

In response to the tragedy, the Philippine government is offering financial support for the victim’s burial and other expenses, coordinated through the Philippine Embassy and the Migrant Workers Office in Kuwait. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Filipino workers in Kuwait, especially during employment transitions. As a result, the government has introduced stricter deployment measures, including monitoring recruitment and requiring prior experience.

Cacdac mentioned that the government is reviewing its policies to prevent future incidents. Additionally, Kabayan Party-list Representative Ron Salo highlighted issues with illegal employment transfers among Filipino workers. In response, the government is enhancing guidelines and improving reporting mechanisms for employment changes, with ongoing discussions about further regulatory tightening.
