The Department of Agriculture (DA) has introduced two new rice varieties, Sulit Rice and Nutri Rice, under its ‘Rice for All’ program, which will be available starting this month. These varieties will be sold at Kadiwa ng Pangulo Centers across the country, as well as in selected public markets and train stations in Metro Manila.
Sulit Rice, priced between PHP35 and PHP36 per kilogram, is made entirely of broken grains but retains good quality. Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa of the DA confirmed its satisfactory quality after testing it in the office. On the other hand, Nutri Rice, which costs PHP37 to PHP38 per kilogram, is a one-pass milled variety that preserves higher levels of nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
De Mesa emphasized the nutritional benefits of Nutri Rice, stating that it is aptly named due to its substantial nutrient content. Alongside these new options, the DA will continue to offer Rice for All at PHP38 to PHP39 per kilogram, with plans for a gradual price reduction throughout 2024.
The DA assures the public of an ample rice supply, sourced both domestically and through imports, with distribution handled by the Food Terminal Incorporated (FTI). De Mesa expressed confidence in the supply, stating, ‘We have plenty of supply and can assure the public that there is enough for everyone.’
The department is also working towards recovering palay production and aims to reach 20 million metric tons this year to support the ongoing initiative.
