The media community in Cagayan de Oro City grieved the passing of several influential figures in 2024, each leaving a lasting impact on journalism and community engagement. Henry Lasola, a seasoned radio broadcaster, died on June 2 at the age of 86. Known for his fluency in Cebuano, Lasola’s career began at the now-defunct DXOR and spanned various radio stations. His contributions extended to translation projects and local history events organized by the city government.
On November 2, Gil Banaag, a lawyer and publisher of the Golden Banner newspaper, passed away at 63. Banaag was a respected member of the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) and played a significant role in community initiatives, particularly those involving real estate and public sector stakeholders.
Monsignor Elmer Abacahin, who died on November 20 at the age of 63, was remembered not only for his work in the Catholic Church but also for his advocacy for press freedom. As the 39th president of the COPC from 2012 to 2017, he organized press freedom rallies and spoke out against injustices faced by media workers.
The year ended with the loss of Lina Sagaral-Reyes on December 14, also at 63. An award-winning journalist, poet, and writer, Reyes was described by the COPC as an invaluable member of the media community. She served as a director of the COPC Journalism Institute and worked to enhance media practices. Reyes was also a recipient of the Palanca Awards for Literature in 1987 for her poetry, and she was a strong advocate for women’s rights and improved access to mental health services.
