President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. paid tribute to the late former US President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday. Marcos highlighted Carter’s steadfast commitment to humanitarian efforts, peace, justice, and human rights. In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Marcos described Carter as a humanitarian who lived by his principles, notably through initiatives like providing homes for the homeless and advocating for the rights of the oppressed. Marcos praised Carter’s faith-driven leadership, noting his efforts to foster peace in war-torn regions and prosperity in impoverished communities. He emphasized that the values Carter championed are universal and cherished globally, including in the Philippines, as essential for building a more compassionate society. Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, was celebrated for his work in global human rights, poverty alleviation, and peace advocacy. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his humanitarian contributions. Additionally, Carter visited the Philippines in 1999 to participate in the Habitat for Humanity project, building affordable homes. Marcos concluded by noting that Carter’s influence extended beyond politics, portraying him as an exemplar of using public office for the greater good, motivated by a genuine love for humanity rather than political or personal gain.
