The Office of the President in the Philippines is set to receive an additional PHP5.2 billion in its 2025 budget to prepare for hosting the ASEAN Summit in 2026, according to Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin. This budget increase was defended by Bersamin following criticisms over the higher allocation approved by the bicameral conference committee. He emphasized the significance of the summit for the country’s international relations during a press briefing at Malacañang, shortly after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed the 2025 General Appropriations Act. The decision to host the summit came after President Marcos accepted the ASEAN chairmanship a year earlier than planned, following Myanmar’s withdrawal. The ASEAN chair oversees not only the leaders’ summits but all related gatherings of the bloc. Bersamin explained that the additional funds were requested post-submission of the National Expenditure Plan to Congress, to supplement the initial budget proposed for the Office of the President. He also indicated that further funding would be sought in the 2026 budget. President Marcos has appointed Bersamin as the chairperson of the ASEAN National Organizing Committee to oversee preparations for the summit.
