Comelec Maintains Ban on Ex-Congressman Erice’s Candidacy for Caloocan Seat

·

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has confirmed the disqualification of former Caloocan City Representative Edgar Erice from contesting the 2nd District seat in the upcoming May 2025 elections. The decision, upheld by the Comelec en banc, stems from Erice’s persistent critique of the automated election system (AES). The 30-page ruling, released recently, supports the earlier decision by the Second Division to prevent Erice from running in the next election cycle. The Comelec emphasized that Erice’s actions to undermine the AES were a significant factor in their decision. The ruling stated that Erice’s behavior not only showed his unsuitability for public office but also a clear disrespect for the electoral process. The petition against Erice, initiated by Raymond Salipot, accused him of spreading false information and causing voter confusion, actions that are against the Omnibus Election Code. Comelec stressed the importance of taking strong action against Erice to maintain public trust and protect the Commission’s reputation from further attacks. The decision highlighted the necessity for the Commission to act firmly to stop the unfounded and harmful accusations made by Erice, which were intended to create public doubt and confusion.
