The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) has ramped up its efforts to curb the use of the illegal ‘boga,’ a homemade cannon used as a noisemaker during New Year celebrations. On Thursday, police operations led to the seizure of 34 boga devices, highlighting the ongoing campaign against these dangerous items. ICPO Director Col. Kim Legada emphasized the serious risks that boga poses to public safety, noting that they have been responsible for numerous injuries and deaths in the past. Under Republic Act No. 7183, the use, possession, and sale of boga are strictly prohibited. To enforce this, the ICPO has increased patrols, worked closely with village leaders, and set up checkpoints throughout the city. Despite these efforts, Iloilo City has not seen any firecracker-related incidents since December 21. The city government continues to urge residents to celebrate safely and avoid illegal fireworks. Mayor Jerry Treñas praised the community’s vigilance and encouraged safer, more meaningful ways to celebrate the New Year, such as joining the musical fireworks display at Drilon Bridge on New Year’s Eve.
