In a move celebrated by lawmakers, Health Secretary Ted Herbosa announced the elimination of the booklet requirement for senior citizens to receive medication discounts. This decision was hailed as a crucial advancement in simplifying access to benefits for the elderly. Senator Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla Jr. expressed his support, noting that the booklet often caused seniors to miss out on discounts due to forgetfulness or misplacement. He praised Herbosa’s initiative, stating it would reduce the burden on seniors and enhance their ability to enjoy their legal rights. Senator Loren Legarda also endorsed the change, emphasizing its significant benefit to indigent seniors and the proper enforcement of the law. The move is part of a broader effort by the national government to streamline processes and ensure that legal benefits are easily accessible to vulnerable groups, especially senior citizens. Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel described the decision as a valuable Christmas gift for the country’s over 9.2 million seniors, highlighting the previous difficulties in applying for discounts and the necessity of carrying numerous documents. He commended the Department of Health (DOH) for simplifying the process and urged Filipinos to support this initiative to ensure seniors can access necessary healthcare. Pimentel also encouraged local government units to consider the vulnerability of seniors when distributing Christmas gifts.
