Police Chief Urges Officers to Avoid Reckless Shooting During New Year Festivities

·

In Manila, the head of the Police Regional Office 3 in Central Luzon, Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, issued a stern warning to police officers against engaging in indiscriminate gunfire during New Year celebrations. Maranan emphasized that the role of the police is not only to enforce the law but also to serve as role models of proper conduct and discipline within the community. He stated, ‘Our duty is to ensure the safety and peace of our community. To our police officers, we are not just law enforcers; we are also exemplars of good behavior and discipline.’ Maranan strictly banned any form of firearm discharge, noting that such actions pose a danger rather than bring joy to the public. He warned that any officer caught in the act of indiscriminate firing would face immediate arrest and severe penalties, both administratively and criminally. Maranan described such behavior as unacceptable and punishable by the harshest measures. He encouraged both his fellow officers and the public to opt for safer alternatives to celebrate the New Year. Additionally, he reminded citizens to comply with Republic Act 7183, which governs the sale, manufacture, distribution, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics. Maranan also called on local government units to enforce ‘firecracker zones’ rigorously to minimize pollution and prevent accidents, especially among children.
