In a significant upgrade to the electrical infrastructure, the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC) has successfully completed a new single-phase primary line in the town of Adams, Ilocos Norte, marking a major improvement in power reliability for the local Indigenous Peoples (IPs) community. The project, costing PHP5 million, was ceremonially energized on December 23, 2024, and was hailed as a ‘Christmas gift’ to the residents by INEC’s acting manager, Cipriano Martinez.
The new line, stretching 7.77 kilometers along the newly constructed Pancian-Adams Road, replaces an outdated seven-kilometer line that was installed back in 1998. The old infrastructure, which was only accessible by foot or single motorcycle, posed significant challenges during power outages, especially during typhoons when the area would often be isolated.
The new system promises an 80 percent efficiency in power restoration during typhoons, a critical improvement considering the area’s vulnerability to severe weather. The project not only enhances the power supply but also supports the development of Adams as an eco-tourism destination.
Adams Mayor Rosalia Dupagen expressed gratitude towards INEC and the Ilocos Norte provincial government for addressing the long-standing power issues in the town. The importance of this upgrade was highlighted during Super Typhoon Egay in July 2023, when residents faced extended power interruptions due to the difficulties in accessing the old line for repairs.
This infrastructural enhancement is a testament to the commitment of local authorities and INEC to improve living conditions and support sustainable development in one of the province’s most remote areas.
