Senator Raffy Tulfo, who leads the Senate Committee on Public Services, has issued a strong call to action for government agencies to focus on the safety, security, and comfort of travelers during the busy Christmas and New Year holiday period. In a statement released on December 23, 2024, Tulfo emphasized the importance of these measures as the country anticipates a surge in passengers at ports, airports, and bus terminals.
Tulfo warned against the recurrence of past issues such as passengers enduring long waits in uncomfortable conditions or being forced onto overcrowded and unsafe ferries and boats. He specifically called on the Philippine Coast Guard to intensify their monitoring and inspection efforts to prevent such occurrences.
Additionally, Tulfo urged the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and the Land Transportation Office to rigorously check the safety and compliance of buses, especially those servicing provincial routes. He highlighted the need for these agencies to ensure that all vehicles are roadworthy and meet all regulatory standards.
With the Ninoy Aquino International Airport expecting heavy traffic, Tulfo insisted on equal treatment for all passengers, rejecting any VIP privileges. He stressed the necessity of thorough security checks, including frisking and x-ray screenings, for everyone.
Tulfo also addressed the importance of efficient toll operations, urging operators like the North Luzon Expressway to maintain functional RFID scanners and readers to prevent delays and inconveniences for travelers.
In his closing remarks, Tulfo reiterated the paramount importance of safety for both passengers and drivers during the holiday season, urging everyone to take precautions and stay safe.
