MANILA – The Social Security System (SSS) has disbursed over PHP1.15 billion in calamity loan assistance to nearly 70,000 members impacted by recent typhoons. According to Carlo Villacorta, the acting head of the Public Affairs and Special Events Division at SSS, the loans were made available last month to members in regions affected by typhoons Kristine, Marce, Nika, Ofel, and Pepito. The loans are specifically for those living in areas officially declared as disaster zones by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Villacorta urged affected members to apply for the calamity loan through their My.SSS account by December 21. To be eligible, members need to have made at least 36 monthly contributions, with six of those within the last 12 months before applying. Self-employed, voluntary members, and land-based Overseas Filipino Workers must have at least six monthly contributions under their current membership type before applying. Additionally, applicants must not have any final benefit claims, overdue SSS short-term loans, outstanding restructured or calamity loans, and if employed, must have their loan application certified by their employer online via the My.SSS facility. Villacorta noted that the severe weather has significantly impacted members’ financial stability, prompting many to utilize the calamity loan to repair or replace damaged property. He expressed hope that the financial aid from SSS would aid in their complete recovery, especially timely as the holiday season approaches.
