In a significant move towards enhancing marine research and sustainability, the Department of Agriculture (DA) of the Philippines has entered into a strategic partnership with OceanX, a global nonprofit dedicated to ocean exploration. The collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed on December 3, 2024, with Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and OceanX co-CEO Mark Dalio leading the initiative.
OceanX will deploy its advanced marine vessel, OceanXplorer, to delve into the Philippines’ marine ecosystems. This partnership aims to gather crucial data that will aid in the sustainable management of the country’s marine resources. Secretary Laurel emphasized the importance of this data in formulating effective strategies to protect and optimize the marine environment for future generations.
Mark Dalio highlighted the use of cutting-edge technology in this endeavor, which is expected to contribute significantly to sustainable ocean resource management. He expressed enthusiasm about the partnership’s potential to blend science and innovation, fostering a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and supporting communities reliant on these resources.
The collaboration is set to involve scientists, policymakers, and community stakeholders, with the goal of promoting ocean stewardship and equipping future generations with the necessary knowledge and tools for sustainability.
