In a stirring address marking the 89th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the military’s top commander, Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., emphasized the crucial role of soldiers in protecting the freedoms that enable Filipinos to envision and achieve a prosperous future. The message was conveyed by Philippine Army commander Lt. Gen. Roy Galido during a joint interfaith prayer and flag-raising ceremony at the Army’s headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
Brawner highlighted the importance of unity and collective effort within the military, stating that these are the sources of their strength and the keys to fulfilling their duties effectively. He stressed that the military’s commitment to these values is essential for contributing to a better future for all Filipinos.
The ceremony, attended by army officers, enlisted personnel, and civilian employees, served as a reminder of the challenges the military faces both internally and externally. Brawner urged everyone to uphold the bonds and ideals that define the nation, emphasizing the necessity of preserving the freedom that allows every Filipino to dream, grow, and thrive.
The AFP, established on December 21, 1935, under the National Defense Act, has its origins in the Philippine Revolutionary Army, reflecting a long history of service and dedication to the country.
