The Department of Health (DOH) has issued a stern reminder to Filipinos to be vigilant on the roads as the holiday season brings a surge in travel. This call to action comes in the wake of a tragic accident on the Katipunan flyover in Quezon City, which claimed four lives on December 5, 2024. As the festive period approaches, the DOH is emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices to prevent similar incidents.
In a recent radio interview, DOH Officer-in-Charge Undersecretary Gloria Balboa highlighted the increased risk of road accidents during the holidays, as many people drive to parties or return to their hometowns. She recommended that drivers adhere to the BLOWBAGETS checklist before setting out, which includes inspecting the battery, lights, oil, water, brakes, air, gas, engine, and tires of their vehicles, as well as ensuring they are in a fit state to drive.
Balboa stressed the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as the risks associated with driving while fatigued. She advised against driving when sleepy or tired, as it increases the likelihood of falling asleep at the wheel. Additionally, she warned against distractions such as texting or using a cellphone while driving, which can lead to a loss of concentration and potential accidents.
Recent statistics from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reveal a concerning trend, with 62,723 road crashes and 332 fatalities reported from January to November 2024. Four-wheeled vehicles were involved in the majority of these incidents, accounting for 54% of the total cases, followed by motorcycles at 22.03% and trucks at 7.41%. The MMDA identified seven major public roads as hotspots for truck-related accidents: C-5 Road, Commonwealth Avenue, Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue, Marcos Highway, Roxas Boulevard, R-10 Road, and Quezon Avenue.
As Filipinos prepare to celebrate the holidays, the DOH’s message is clear: prioritize safety on the roads to ensure a joyous and accident-free festive season.
