Philippine National Police Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Online Firecracker Sales

·

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is stepping up its efforts to curb the illegal sale of firecrackers on the internet, aiming to reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities during New Year celebrations. PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil has instructed the Civil Security Group (CSG) and the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to enhance their surveillance and pursue those selling banned firecrackers online.

During an inspection in Bocaue, Bulacan, Marbil highlighted the roles of the ACG and CSG. The ACG is tasked with conducting cyber patrols, while the CSG manages the issuance of transport permits. Marbil noted that individuals using motorcycles to transport firecrackers often lack the necessary permits, posing significant dangers due to the difficulty in importing these items.

The PNP plans to conduct regular checks and monitoring to stop the sale of illegal firecrackers. Marbil emphasized that the police are well-informed about the types of illegal firecrackers, which are hazardous and can cause fires. The list of banned firecrackers includes Piccolo, Super Lolo, Atomic Triangle, Large Judas Belt, Large Bawang, Pillbox, Bosa, Goodbye Philippines, Bin Laden, Mother Rocket, Lolo Thunder, Coke In Can, Atomic Bomb, Five Star, Pla-Pla, Giant Whistle Bomb, Goodbye Napoles, Hello Columbia, Goodbye De Lima, Super Yolanda, Kingkong, Goodbye Bading, Kabasi, Hamas, and Watusi.

These illegal firecrackers are typically overweight, containing more than 0.2 grams of explosives, and lack proper markings such as the manufacturer’s name and address. Additionally, the standard fuse of a firecracker should burn between 3 to 6 seconds.

Marbil also mentioned ongoing efforts to monitor illegal firecracker manufacturers. CSG Director Maj. Gen. Leo Francisco warned against the online sale of firecrackers, noting that such sales are illegal and the quality and safety compliance of these products are uncertain. Francisco is working with online platforms like Shopee and Lazada to address the issue, as these sites are common venues for illegal sales. He stressed that the illegal trade not only endangers public health but also undermines legitimate manufacturers and the fireworks industry as a whole.
