The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a warning about the potential for flooding and lahar flows from Kanlaon Volcano, as Tropical Depression Querubin is expected to degrade into a remnant low within the next day. According to PAGASA’s weather specialist Veronica Torres, the remnants of Querubin will be dangerously close to Mt. Kanlaon by Friday, urging residents in the vicinity to be on high alert for these hazards. Despite its weakening, Querubin is still set to bring significant rainfall across Visayas, Mindanao, the Sulu Sea, and Palawan. As of the latest update at 10 a.m., the depression was positioned 195 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, with winds reaching up to 45 km/h and gusts to 55 km/h. Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is currently hoisted over Surigao del Sur. Heavy to intense rainfall is expected in Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur, while moderate to heavy rains are forecasted for Quezon, Bicol Region, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol, Agusan del Norte, Misamis Oriental, and Davao Oriental. Additionally, PAGASA has advised caution for sea travel due to very rough seas in Batanes, Cagayan, and the northern coast of Ilocos Norte. Torres emphasized the need for residents in vulnerable areas to brace for potential flooding and landslides.
