Comelec Retracts Disqualification Petition Against Cagayan de Oro Candidate

·

In a significant development in Cagayan de Oro, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has decided to retract its petition aimed at disqualifying a congressional hopeful. The motion to withdraw was filed by the Comelec Law Department on Wednesday, targeting Raineir Joaquin Uy, who is running for the position of First District representative in the upcoming 2025 elections. This decision was communicated to the Comelec Second Division located in Manila.

The retraction comes after the Law Department received new information pertinent to the case, prompting a need for further investigation and a reassessment of the situation. The initial petition was based on claims of an unusual surge in voter numbers in District 1, specifically in Barangay Carmen, where Uy holds the position of chairperson.

Alan Genoso, a legal representative for Uy, expressed approval of the Comelec’s decision, stressing the significance of fairness and adherence to due process in electoral proceedings. Genoso stated, ‘From the outset, we have advocated for the truth and evidence to guide our actions. Our focus remains on providing impactful service and advancing together for the betterment of Cagayan de Oro.’

Raineir Joaquin Uy, who was defeated by the current representative, Lordan Suan, in the 2022 elections, is preparing to face Suan once more in the 2025 electoral race.
