Bacolod City has taken a significant leap forward in its energy strategy by inaugurating a 400-kilowatt solar power system at its Government Center. The event, marked by a ceremonial switch-on, was attended by Mayor Abelardo Benitez and Frederic Tesfay, head of Urban Act and Renewable Energy Projects in the Philippines for GIZ, the German development agency. Tesfay praised the city’s initiative, stating that it represents a monumental step towards a sustainable energy future for Bacolod.
The solar power system, which cost over PHP20 million, is expected to slash the city’s electricity bills by approximately 50 percent, with monthly savings projected at around PHP1.5 million. Mayor Benitez emphasized the city’s ownership of the system, highlighting their direct investment in renewable energy.
Bacolod’s commitment to solar energy extends beyond the Government Center. The city plans to expand its solar capacity to 1,340 kilowatts, which will also power various public facilities across different barangays. Notable projects include a 150-kilowatt system in Barangay Taculing, a 140-kilowatt system in Barangay Sum-ag, and smaller installations in other areas like Barangay Vista Alegre, Granada, and Villamonte.
Tesfay noted that Bacolod’s proactive approach sets it apart from other cities, positioning it as a leader in innovation and sustainable development. He envisions that as more entities invest in renewable energy, costs will decrease, fostering industrial growth and economic prosperity.
