The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is gearing up for a significant increase in port traffic, projecting 4.5 million passengers across the country this December. This figure marks a sharp rise from the passenger numbers recorded in November, attributed to the holiday season’s peak travel period.
Eunice Samonte, the spokesperson for PPA, explained that the expected increase is a rebound from the lower passenger counts during the ‘Undas’ holidays in November, which were affected by a series of typhoons. She noted, “We experienced a slight drop in passengers in November due to consecutive storms. We anticipate that those who couldn’t travel then will flock to the ports this December.”
Data from the PPA indicates that from October 28 to November 4, only 1.076 million passengers were recorded, a 34% decrease from the anticipated 1.622 million and also less than the 1.544 million passengers seen during the same timeframe the previous year.
In preparation for the holiday rush, the PPA has issued reminders on social media for passengers traveling with pets to secure shipping permits from the Bureau of Animal Industry-National Quarantine Services. Additionally, they must obtain a Veterinary Health Certificate from their veterinarians.
The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has also issued safety advisories for sea travelers. They recommend checking weather conditions and travel schedules prior to departure, completing online check-ins, and signing the passenger manifest. MARINA further cautioned passengers against overcrowding on vessels to prevent capsizing and urged them to report any suspicious activities to the ship’s crew or port authorities.
