In a significant development in the ongoing conflict against the New People’s Army (NPA) in Northern Samar, the Philippine Army’s 20th Infantry Battalion successfully recovered two firearms following a brief skirmish with six communist rebels. The encounter took place in the secluded areas of Manering village, Catubig, on Monday, December 16, 2024. The firefight, which lasted approximately 15 minutes, led to the seizure of a Bushmaster M4 rifle and an M16 rifle, along with other NPA equipment and personal items. Fortunately, no casualties were reported during the engagement.
Lt. Col. Richard Villaflor, the battalion’s commander, praised the local residents for their crucial role in providing intelligence that led to the operation. He emphasized the importance of community cooperation in combating insurgency, stating, “Our troops demonstrated their dedication to peace and security in Catubig, thanks to the information from concerned citizens. This achievement highlights our troops’ commitment and the essential contribution of the community in our fight against insurgency. We appreciate the public’s trust and timely assistance in safeguarding our barangays. Let’s stay united and alert to achieve lasting peace and development in Northern Samar.”
This recent success is part of a broader intensified campaign against NPA insurgents in the region, following a major confrontation earlier in the month. On December 2, a fierce battle in Paco village, Las Navas, resulted in the deaths of seven rebels. Subsequent operations on December 5 in Barangay Victory, Las Navas, and Barangay Geparayan de Turag, Silvino Lobos, led to the deaths of two more NPA members.
