Government Accelerates Seizure of Illegal POGO Assets, Palace Announces

·

In a decisive move against illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), the government is intensifying efforts to expedite the seizure of their assets, according to a statement from Malacañang on Tuesday. The announcement came during an event at Malacañan Palace where Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin highlighted the urgency of the situation, despite the slow pace of existing forfeiture laws.

Bersamin emphasized the government’s commitment to speeding up the process while ensuring due process for asset holders. ‘We cannot simply seize these assets without following legal procedures, but the laws and regulations for forfeiture are already in place,’ he explained. The Senate is considering a new bill that would allow the government to claim all POGO assets, including buildings, equipment, and profits, in favor of the state.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has made it clear that no further directive is needed for the forfeiture of POGO properties linked to criminal activities. Bersamin noted that these assets would be repurposed for legitimate government use, with the government deciding their disposal based on its judgment.

The House of Representatives has also introduced a similar measure in November. Additionally, President Marcos issued Executive Order 74 on November 5, which immediately bans POGOs, internet gaming, and other offshore gaming operations across the country. This order extends to internet gaming licensees and other offshore gaming licensees, covering new applications, renewals, and the cessation of operations.
