Philippine National Police to Maintain Operations Amid CPP Anniversary

·

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has decided against suspending its offensive operations against communist rebels as the 55th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) approaches on December 26. PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo announced during a press briefing at Camp Crame that the police force will remain vigilant, especially given the historical tendency of communist and local terrorist groups to exploit such suspensions for attacks.

Fajardo emphasized that no Suspension of Offensive Police Operations (SOPO) will be declared during the holiday season, citing past instances where security forces’ operational pauses were used by insurgents to launch ambushes and retaliatory strikes. The PNP has instructed all regional offices to stay on high alert and has increased surveillance in areas prone to crime to mitigate potential threats.

In preparation for the CPP anniversary, the PNP is enhancing security measures, particularly in remote and vulnerable police stations, to prevent harassment and ambushes. Fajardo noted that with recent arrests of high-ranking communist leaders, the risk of retaliatory attacks is heightened, and the PNP will collaborate with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to safeguard these areas.

As part of the Ligtas Paskuhan initiative, which extends until January 6, 2025, approximately 47,000 police officers have been deployed nationwide. Additionally, police leaves have been canceled effective December 15 to ensure full staffing during this period.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil has ordered comprehensive security measures to be implemented in coordination with local government units, church officials, and other stakeholders. Police Assistance Desks will be set up near churches, and intensified patrols will cover strategic locations such as transport hubs, parking lots, and markets. Nationwide, police units are collaborating with local authorities and other law enforcement agencies to handle any emergencies or incidents effectively.
