In a significant move to tackle food wastage and hunger, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has launched the ‘Walang Gutom’ Kitchen in Pasay City. This initiative, inaugurated on December 16, 2024, is a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors aimed at reducing food waste and addressing the hunger crisis in Metro Manila, with plans to expand nationwide.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian emphasized the kitchen’s role in minimizing food wastage, stating that it will serve as a food bank where excess food from the private sector can be donated. This aligns with the Food Donation Act of 2009, encouraging the donation of wholesome food for charitable causes. The kitchen, housed in a repurposed former Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) hub, not only provides free meals but also integrates three innovative DSWD programs: the Pag-Abot Program, Walang Gutom Program, and Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program.
The Pag-Abot Program offers food and basic necessities to clients, while the Walang Gutom Kitchen facilitates individualized case management for homeless individuals, including assessment, intervention, planning, and progress tracking. Additionally, the Tara, Basa! reading corners provide learning and developmental interventions such as parenting education and character-building activities.
First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos attended the launch, joining Secretary Gatchalian and private sector partners in serving hot meals to beneficiaries. Other notable attendees included Pasay City Mayor Imelda Calixto-Rubiano and various DSWD officials. The initiative welcomes all types of food and drink donations from the private sector, in line with legal provisions, to help feed and support those in need daily.
