In a remarkable display of academic excellence, two scholars from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) have secured top positions in the September 2024 licensure examination for professional teachers. Shandie Carbonell and Patricia Balico, both alumni of Mariano Marcos State University in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, achieved 8th and 9th places respectively, showcasing their dedication and prowess in the field of education.
Carbonell, who benefited from a DOST merit scholarship, scored an impressive 93 percent. Balico, supported by the RA 7687 scholarship under the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994, closely followed with a score of 92.80 percent. Their achievements were celebrated by DOST Ilocos Norte Director Benjamin Mercado Jr., who praised their hard work and dedication.
Director Mercado expressed his pride in their accomplishments and encouraged them to continue their pursuit of excellence in advancing science and technology in the nation. He affirmed the DOST-Provincial Science and Technology Office’s commitment to supporting their future endeavors.
Balico, who graduated magna cum laude, shared her journey on social media, highlighting how her initial plan to pursue a pre-law course shifted to education after discovering her passion for teaching. She credited the DOST-Science Education Institute undergraduate scholarship for enabling her to follow this new path, which she found deeply fulfilling and purposeful.
