In a move to bolster the agricultural sector, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has unveiled plans for a centralized marketplace designed to uplift the livelihoods of farmers across Mindanao. This initiative was announced by MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso Magno during the Farmers Summit held in Davao City, which saw the participation of 800 farmers from the region.
Secretary Magno emphasized that the proposed marketplace would eliminate intermediaries, allowing farmers to receive higher returns on their crops. This aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision to fortify the nation’s agricultural backbone.
The summit also marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Center for Asian Mission for the Poor (CAMP ASIA Inc.) and the Davao Mt. Apo Farmers Agricultural Cooperative (DAMAFACO). This partnership aims to promote sustainable agriculture, with CAMP ASIA providing technical assistance and market access, while DAMAFACO works on enhancing cooperative efforts among farming communities.
Additionally, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) contributed to the cause by donating a truck to DAMAFACO, which will help lower transportation costs for crops and equipment, thereby boosting the cooperative’s efficiency and profitability.
Secretary Magno expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the summit, highlighting the crucial role of collaborative efforts in advancing Mindanao’s agricultural sector. He remains optimistic about creating a prosperous future for the region’s farmers and their families.
