Borongan City’s Free Medicine Program Benefits Over 35,000 Residents

·

In a commendable initiative, the local government of Borongan City in Eastern Samar has provided free medicines to 35,077 underprivileged residents since the launch of its pharmacy in September 2021, located at the city hall complex. The program has expanded with the establishment of satellite pharmacies in the villages of Sta. Fe, San Jose, Lalawigan, Benowangan, and Maypangdan, enhancing accessibility for the city’s population.

Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda emphasized the importance of the program, stating that it significantly alleviates the financial strain of medical costs for low-income families. He further highlighted the city’s commitment to the health of its residents as a cornerstone of true progress, underscoring the belief that the strength of Borongan lies in its people.

The initiative has received recognition from the Department of Health’s regional office during the Eastern Visayas Health Summit and Awards 2024, held on December 10 and 11. To access free maintenance medicines, patients need a doctor’s prescription issued within the last three months. For other medications, the prescription must be no older than seven days.

To avail of the free medicines, individuals must present a photocopy of their voter’s ID or certification, a birth certificate for those under 18, and an authorization letter along with a valid ID if someone else is collecting the medicine on behalf of the patient.
