In response to heightened volcanic activity at Mt. Kanlaon, the Philippine Army’s Visayas Command (Viscom) has stepped up to aid local government units in executing a mandatory evacuation in three nearby locales. The urgency of the situation was underscored by Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., who, in his capacity as the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Chair, mandated the evacuation of residents within a 4-km radius of the volcano.
The operation, which began on Monday night, saw the deployment of Humanitarian and Disaster Relief (HADR) teams to Canlaon City, La Castellana, and Bago City by Tuesday morning. These teams, each comprising nine members equipped with essential tools, communication devices, and transportation, are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of approximately 87,000 residents affected by the evacuation order.
The 62nd Infantry Battalion has been particularly active in Bago City, assisting with the evacuation efforts since Monday. Their involvement was highlighted by Lt. Col. Israel Galorio, the Viscom information officer, who confirmed the military’s role in the operation.
In addition to the military’s efforts, the NDRRMC has activated the National Inter-Agency Coordinating Cell to manage the overall response to the crisis. Further support was sought by Joel Erestain, the director of the Office of Civil Defense 7, who reached out to the 302nd Infantry Brigade for additional assistance.
