In response to the first confirmed case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N2 in Camarines Norte, the Department of Agriculture in Bicol (DA-5) has swiftly established a command center and initiated a series of control measures. The outbreak, detected in backyard ducks in the towns of Talisay and Vinzons, prompted immediate action from the DA-5’s Regional Quick Response Team for Animal Disease and Emergencies (RQRT-ADE). The team has begun culling the affected ducks to curb the spread of the virus, which was first noted on December 10, 2024.
DA-5 Regional Executive Director Rodel Tornilla emphasized the importance of these measures, which also include ongoing surveillance and monitoring within a one-kilometer radius of the outbreak sites. Movement restrictions within the quarantine zones are in place to prevent the spread of potentially infected poultry. The DA-5 is collaborating with local government units, the Bureau of Animal Industry, the Department of Health, and municipal agriculture offices to ensure a coordinated response. Affected farmers will receive proper indemnification.
Tornilla reassured the public that there is no evidence of the virus transmitting to humans from poultry products, provided they are thoroughly cooked. He advised consumers to check for meat inspection certificates when purchasing chicken. Additionally, poultry owners are urged to enhance biosecurity measures on their farms, including maintaining good hand hygiene, ensuring poultry is cooked thoroughly, and promptly reporting any unusual bird illnesses or deaths to local agricultural or veterinary offices.
The DA-5 remains committed to managing the avian flu outbreak and is calling on the public to assist in preventing further spread. Regular updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
