In response to the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on December 9, the Department of Education in Western Visayas (DepEd VI) has announced that 802 public schools in the region have transitioned to an alternative delivery mode to safeguard students and staff. Hernani Escullar Jr., the information officer for DepEd VI, emphasized during a December 11 interview that the primary concern is the safety and well-being of the educational community. This shift aims to continue providing essential support to learners and personnel amidst the crisis. The breakdown of affected schools includes 289 in Antique, 53 in Guimaras, 98 in Iloilo, and 362 in Negros Occidental as of December 11. Escullar also noted that school division offices are actively coordinating with local government units and health authorities to adhere to current health protocols. Additionally, these offices are prepared to offer Psychological First Aid to address any mental health concerns among those affected. Following the eruption on Monday, Mt. Kanlaon remains at Alert Level 3.
