CEBU CITY – The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on Monday has prompted the Visayas Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to elevate its Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) teams to high alert status. The volcano, located on Negros Island, erupted at 3:03 p.m., sending a volcanic plume soaring 4,000 meters above its summit.

Lt. Gen. Fernando Reyeg, the commander of Viscom, confirmed that HADR teams, especially those on Negros Island, are on standby and prepared to aid residents near the volcano. ‘Our mobility assets are ready to ensure a rapid and effective response,’ Reyeg stated, emphasizing the military’s commitment to supporting and protecting communities during crises. He urged the public to remain alert and follow local authority directives.

Military units on Negros Island are working closely with local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMCs) to manage the risks associated with the eruption. Observations confirmed the presence of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), consisting of hot gas, ash, and volcanic debris, flowing down the volcano’s southeastern slopes.

Reyeg highlighted the critical need for coordinated disaster response efforts, stating, ‘Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our citizens. United, we will overcome this challenge and become more resilient.’
