MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced on Tuesday that the government is poised to support the families displaced by the recent eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island.
During a press conference, Marcos revealed that Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian is currently on the ground in Negros, managing the relief efforts.
He further stated that the Department of Budget and Management has confirmed the availability of sufficient funds to tackle the crisis.
“We are fully equipped to assist the families who have been moved out of the 6 km danger zone. The volcano has indeed erupted,” Marcos explained to the media.
He also mentioned that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources along with the Department of Science and Technology are actively monitoring air quality to determine if further evacuations are necessary.
The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon occurred on Monday afternoon, resulting in a massive ash plume and prompting local officials to evacuate nearby residents.
Standing over 8,000 feet tall, Mt. Kanlaon is among the 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines. (Philippine News Agency)
