Health Support Promised to Canlaon City Residents Following Mt. Kanlaon’s Eruption

In the wake of Mt. Kanlaon’s eruption on Monday, December 9, 2024, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) in Negros Oriental has committed to providing essential medical supplies to the affected residents of Canlaon City. Dr. Liland Estacion, head of the PHO, confirmed that preparations are underway to send additional resources, including face masks and goggles, which were initially stockpiled after an earlier eruption in June. The office is also considering the distribution of N95 masks due to the reported ashfall around the volcano.

The PHO is not only focusing on respiratory protection but is also preparing to supply water treatment tablets, jerry cans, medicines, nebulizers, and nebules to meet the broader health needs of the community. To ensure the safety of drinking water, two ambulances equipped with an ambulatory testing machine have been dispatched to Canlaon City.

As of Tuesday morning, 146 families, totaling 476 individuals, have sought refuge in evacuation centers set up at Macario Española Memorial School and Jose B. Cardenas Memorial High School. These evacuees hail from the high-risk barangays of Masulog and Pula, located within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone around the volcano. Additionally, four families, comprising 12 people, have evacuated but are not residing in the designated centers.

The PHO remains vigilant, continuously monitoring the situation and collaborating with local authorities to address the ongoing health and safety concerns of the displaced residents.
