DSWD-7 Confirms Ample Relief Supplies for Families Impacted by Disasters

In the wake of the recent eruption of Mt. Kanlaon, the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD-7) has reassured the public of their readiness to support disaster-affected families. On Tuesday, DSWD-7 Regional Director Shalaine Lucero emphasized that the agency has sufficient relief supplies on hand, ready to be distributed in response to major disasters like the volcanic eruption that occurred on Monday.

Lucero joined DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian in visiting the most affected regions in Negros Occidental, where the eruption had caused significant disruption by spewing pyroclastic materials and ash over nearby areas. In preparation for possible further volcanic activity or its consequences, DSWD-7 has strategically placed 900 non-food items in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental. These supplies include 300 family kits, 300 kitchen kits, and 300 sleeping kits, all stored in the agency’s warehouse.

Additionally, DSWD’s Quick Response Team and Mobile Command Center have been deployed to Canlaon City to enhance emergency communication and coordination. The Mobile Command Center, a vehicle equipped for such situations, plays a crucial role in maintaining effective response operations.

At evacuation centers such as Macario Española Memorial School and Jose B. Cardenas Memorial High School, Canlaon Mayor Jose Chubasco B. Cardenas, with support from DSWD staff, has been distributing packed meals and hygiene kits to over 400 internally displaced persons. DSWD-7 is also stepping up its monitoring efforts at these sites, preparing for potential health issues or the need for further evacuations following the eruption.
