Senator Tulfo to Launch Inquiry into TNVS Fare Increases

·

Senator Raffy Tulfo has declared his intention to initiate a Senate investigation into the recent spike in fares charged by Transportation Network Vehicle Services (TNVS), such as Grab Philippines. The senator aims to safeguard the interests of both commuters and drivers.

Tulfo highlighted that he has received numerous complaints from passengers about the excessive surge fees added to their fares when using the Grab app. He explained that surge fees are typically applied during high-demand periods to incentivize more drivers to work.

Currently, transport network companies (TNCs) that manage TNVS are permitted to increase fares up to double the standard rate during surge periods.

In response to these concerns, Tulfo’s office has contacted the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to understand what measures have been implemented. The LTFRB has confirmed that it has held multiple hearings and is preparing to release a draft resolution soon.

This upcoming resolution will detail the LTFRB’s findings and propose penalties for those who do not comply with the fare regulations set out in Memorandum Circular No. 2019-036.

The LTFRB also warned that TNCs found breaching fare rules could be subject to fines, suspension, or even the revocation of their franchise, according to Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01.
