President Marcos Signs Law to Tackle Youth Mental Health Crisis in Schools

·

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has taken a significant step towards addressing the critical mental health issues among the youth by signing into law the Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act, known as Republic Act 12080. The signing ceremony took place in Malacañang, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s approach to mental health in educational settings.

The new legislation aims to transform schools into environments that not only foster learning but also prioritize the mental well-being of students and educators. It mandates the creation and execution of mental health programs tailored for students, teachers, and other school staff in both public and private institutions.

Marcos emphasized the importance of mental health in achieving academic excellence and reducing absenteeism, stating that a mentally healthy school community fosters a culture of compassion and understanding. He highlighted the alarming statistics that show 17 percent of Filipino youth have contemplated suicide, yet only a fraction seek professional help.

The law seeks to close this gap by integrating mental health services directly into schools, positioning them as the frontline in combating mental health challenges. As part of the initiative, every public school will establish care centers managed by school counselors and associates, who will offer counseling, stress management workshops, and programs aimed at reducing the stigma associated with mental health.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara expressed gratitude to President Marcos for prioritizing education and the welfare of learners. He noted that the new law is a crucial step towards equipping students with the necessary socio-emotional skills to face modern challenges, contributing to a healthier and more vibrant future for the Philippines.
