MANILA – In a significant crackdown on illegal nuclear material trade, the NBI disclosed the results of their month-long operations, which led to the confiscation of around 100 kilograms of depleted uranium and the arrest of three individuals involved in the illicit trade.

According to a delayed press release, the NBI conducted an entrapment operation in Pasay City during October, leading to the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of 20 kilograms of metal bars and 3 kilograms of black powder, all of which tested positive for uranium-235 and uranium-238.

Subsequently, a third suspect was apprehended in Cagayan de Oro City. The seizure included an additional 3 kilograms of black powder, rock material, small metal items, and other contaminated objects, all confirmed to contain uranium.

Prior to these operations, the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) had approached NBI Director Jaime Santiago for assistance in tackling the illegal trade of depleted uranium.

The PNRI highlighted the severe national security risks posed by depleted uranium, noting its potential use in manufacturing nuclear weapons and armor-piercing ammunition.

The NBI also pointed out the health hazards associated with depleted uranium due to its radioactive and toxic properties, which could endanger individuals in close proximity.

Further operations on November 8 and 9 in Mandaue City resulted in the recovery of about 60 kilograms of black metals, which also tested positive for uranium.

The apprehended suspects face charges under Republic Act No. 5207, the amended Atomic Energy Regulatory and Liability Act. (Philippine News Agency)
