Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas has returned to his duties after a three-month medical leave, announcing his intent to prioritize the completion of several key infrastructure projects. At a press conference on Monday, December 9, 2024, Treñas outlined his focus on finishing ongoing projects and initiating new ones before his term ends.
Among the projects nearing completion are the legislative building, which is just an elevator away from being fully operational, and the government center next to Aduana, set to become a one-stop shop for business permits. Treñas emphasized that streamlining business processes would attract more investments and create jobs.
The mayor also highlighted the upcoming completion of the terminal and central markets by SM Prime Holdings, expected before mid-2025. Additionally, Treñas addressed the long-stalled construction of a new slaughterhouse, stating that the city will take direct action due to the lack of private partners. He stressed the importance of having a facility that meets high standards for public health.
Another project on the horizon is a five-story parking facility near city hall, with demolition permits already in process. Treñas also signed off on a budget for a collective negotiation agreement, promising PHP30,000 to each qualified city hall employee. He awaits a presidential proclamation for service recognition incentives and gratuity pay, for which the city has already allocated funds.
Treñas’s return follows a bile duct operation, and he is keen on ensuring these projects are completed or well underway before handing over to the incoming administration.
