Local Cooperation Key to Government’s Success Against NPA in Northern Samar

·

In a significant blow to the New People’s Army (NPA), the Philippine Army reported the deaths of nine rebels, including two key leaders, in recent clashes in Northern Samar. The operations, which took place in the mountainous regions of Las Navas, were largely successful due to the crucial intelligence provided by local residents from previously rebel-influenced areas.

Lt. Col. Marvin Maraggun, head of the 19th Infantry Battalion, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in these victories. He highlighted that the operations were a result of a strong partnership with the communities of Victory, Paco, and Osmeña in Las Navas. Maraggun urged continued vigilance and reporting of suspicious activities to maintain the momentum towards lasting peace.

The first encounter occurred on December 2, when seven NPA fighters were killed during a fierce battle in Paco village. The rebels were entrenched in a fortified position equipped with anti-personnel mines. Following this, on December 5, two more NPA members were killed in clashes in Victory village in Las Navas and Geparayan de Turag in Silvino Lobos.

The aftermath of these confrontations saw the military recovering significant weaponry, including four M16 rifles, two pistols, and three grenades, along with various personal items. This haul has notably diminished the NPA’s operational strength in the region.

Maraggun called on village officials and residents to keep up their efforts in reporting any suspicious individuals or activities, stressing that their cooperation is essential for achieving enduring peace and security in Northern Samar.

The rugged terrain and dense forests of Northern Samar have long been a stronghold for the NPA, partly because these areas are difficult to access and control. The military has noted that the NPA uses these remote locations as a base for fundraising to support their armed struggle.
