The Philippine government has deported 187 Chinese nationals who were arrested during raids on illegal offshore gaming operations, known locally as POGOs. The deportation was announced by Undersecretary Gilbert Cruz, the Executive Director of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), who confirmed that the individuals were sent back to Shanghai from Ninoy Aquino International Airport on a Thursday flight.
The arrests took place over recent months in various locations including Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu, Bamban and Porac in Tarlac, and Metro Manila. Cruz explained that these individuals were detained because they failed to provide necessary documentation such as passports, classifying them as undesirable aliens and violators of immigration laws.
The deportation process was coordinated with the Chinese Embassy in Manila. Cruz emphasized that these deportees are not seen as victims but as operators involved in criminal activities related to POGOs and scamming hubs. Upon their return to China, they will need to prove their innocence, as China has strict policies against illegal gambling and scams, which typically result in detention.
This action comes in the wake of Executive Order 74, signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., which mandates the cessation of all POGO activities in the Philippines by December 31. The order aims to completely ban offshore gaming, internet gaming, and other similar operations within the country.
