Philippines and Chile Aim to Strengthen Ties in Trade and Agriculture

MANILA – The Philippines and Chile are actively seeking to enhance their cooperation in various sectors, with a particular focus on agriculture, trade, and investment.

During an official visit to Manila, Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren held discussions with Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo. Their talks covered a broad spectrum of topics, including trade and investment, agriculture, disaster risk management, maritime cooperation, and tourism.

The two nations expressed optimism about the progress towards a potential free trade agreement, marking a significant step in their economic relations.

On Friday, they officially kicked off negotiations for the Philippine-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). If successful, this would mark the Philippines’ first such agreement with a Latin American nation.

The ministers also reflected on their joint leadership at the ASEAN-Pacific Alliance Ministerial Meeting in New York last September, where they committed to advancing initiatives in science, technology, innovation, smart cities, connectivity, and environmental efforts.

The visit by the Chilean minister underscores Chile’s dedication to deepening its relationship with the Philippines, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
