Carlito Galvez Jr., the Secretary of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue and engagement with former insurgent groups to maintain peace. His comments came during the celebration of the 24th anniversary of the 2000 Peace Agreement between the government and the Rebolusyonaryong Partido ng Manggagawa – Pilipinas/Revolutionary Proletarian Army/Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPM-P/RPA/ABB).
Galvez highlighted that the anniversary is a tribute to the bold and resolute actions taken by both sides over the years in their pursuit of peace. He noted that over two decades after the agreement was signed, members of the group, previously known as RPM-P/RPA/ABB – Tabara-Paduano Group and now called Kapatiran Para sa Progresong Panlipunan, Inc., or Kapatiran, have abandoned armed conflict and are now leading peaceful and productive lives.
The government, according to Galvez, is actively working with the Nilo Dela Cruz Group (NDCG) to develop a comprehensive peace and development plan, and to facilitate amnesty for eligible members. He stressed that OPAPRU is committed to improving the lives of Kapatiran and NDCG members, using the organization as a model to inspire and transform the lives of others who have rejoined society.
Despite acknowledging the challenges on the path to peace, Galvez praised the dedication of both parties to their shared vision of a peaceful and prosperous nation. He expressed optimism that their collaboration would grow stronger in the future, as they continue their efforts toward achieving genuine and lasting peace.
Galvez concluded by urging everyone to keep nurturing the seeds of peace and to work together towards a brighter future for all Filipinos.
