Senator Ronald Dela Rosa has expressed his belief that the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte will proceed to a trial in the Senate. He stated during a virtual press conference that he is bracing for the worst and anticipates that the House of Representatives will push forward with the impeachment process.
Dela Rosa remarked, ‘I am expecting the worst. There will definitely be an impeachment.’ He further added that once the case reaches the Senate and they convene as an impeachment court, they will handle the proceedings accordingly.
Despite the budget cuts proposed for the Office of the Vice President’s 2025 budget by both the House and the Senate, Dela Rosa stressed that these should not be seen as a predictor of the outcome of any potential impeachment trial. He noted that although more than ten senators initially supported increasing the OVP’s budget, they ultimately agreed to follow the House’s version due to strong statements from the Senate leadership.
Dela Rosa highlighted the difference in dynamics when the Senate acts as an impeachment court, saying, ‘We are different when it comes to an impeachment court. The true sentiments of all 24 senators will emerge, and each will have their own stance.’
Senate President Francis Escudero has also confirmed that the Senate is required to address any impeachment complaint filed, even during the adjournment of the regular session of Congress.
