Lagman Withdraws from Albay Governor Race, Backs Rosal

·

In a significant political development in Albay, former governor Edcel Greco Alexander Lagman has announced his withdrawal from the gubernatorial race and pledged his support to Noel Rosal. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Oriental Hotel in Legazpi City on December 5, 2024. This move sets the stage for a direct contest between Rosal and Albay 2nd District Representative Joey Salceda in the upcoming elections.

Lagman, who had been suspended by the Ombudsman, decided to step back to bolster Rosal’s chances against Salceda. Rosal, who secured the governorship in the 2022 elections, faced disqualification by the Commission on Elections. Lagman’s decision to withdraw was driven by a desire to unite their political forces and enhance Rosal’s prospects of victory.

During the press conference, Lagman emphasized the importance of unity and the need to protect Albay from politicians who might exploit state resources for personal gain. He stated that his withdrawal was a strategic move to ensure that the governance of Albay remains in the hands of those chosen by the people, not through manipulation or greed.

Lagman plans to officially withdraw his candidacy from the Commission on Elections within the week. He expressed that his decision was not made lightly but was motivated by a genuine commitment to the future of Albay.

Rosal expressed gratitude for Lagman’s support, acknowledging it as a significant sacrifice. He stressed the necessity of uniting the people of Albay to safeguard the province from any electoral irregularities and to uphold true democratic principles.
