In a significant development in the fight against insurgency, two high-ranking members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Eastern Samar have surrendered to the Philippine Army. The surrender took place on December 1, 2024, in Borongan City, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s efforts to quell communist rebellion. The commanders, whose identities remain undisclosed, were moved by the heartfelt Christmas wishes from their families, facilitated through the Philippine Army’s ‘Wish Upon a Star’ initiative. This project, part of the broader ‘Friends Rescued Engagement through Their Families’ (FReE Families) program, aims to reconnect rebels with their loved ones and encourage them to abandon the armed struggle. Upon their surrender, the duo handed over a substantial cache of weapons, including an M60 light machine gun, a K3 squad automatic weapon, two AK47 rifles, four M16 rifles, one M14 rifle, and one M4 rifle, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition and various personal items. These arms were discovered buried in San Gabriel village, Borongan City. Brig. Gen. Noel Vestuir of the 802nd Infantry Brigade praised the operation, emphasizing the role of comprehensive debriefings and family engagement programs in neutralizing the NPA’s influence in Eastern Samar. Maj. Gen. Adonis Ariel Orio of the 8th Infantry Division echoed this sentiment, calling on remaining NPA members to embrace peace and take advantage of government reintegration programs. The successful operation underscores the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between military forces, local leaders, and the community in addressing the long-standing insurgency issue in Eastern Visayas.
