Borongan City in Eastern Samar has solidified its status as a leading destination for sports and adventure following its successful hosting of the first leg of the 10th Philippine Kiteboarding Tour. The event, which took place from November 29 to December 1, 2024, at Baybay Beach, drew participants from Ireland, Estonia, Spain, Germany, Lithuania, China, Thailand, and local talents from Boracay, Palawan, Puerto Galera, Cagbalete, Cebu, and Manila.

Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda expressed immense pride in the city’s ability to attract kiteboarding enthusiasts from around the globe, highlighting the event as a pivotal moment for Borongan and Eastern Samar. He emphasized that the tournament not only boosts the city’s sports tourism but also showcases its commitment to preserving its natural attractions, with 60% of its land covered by rainforests managed by local organizations.

The Philippine Kiteboarding Association (PKA), with support from International Container Terminal Services, Inc., organized the competition. The mayor noted that the event aligns with the city’s environmental protection campaign, aiming to safeguard its natural resources for future generations.

Rupert Ambil, Borongan’s city information officer, acknowledged the PKA’s role in elevating the city’s profile as a premier destination for water sports and adventure. He mentioned that hosting the PKA Tour’s first leg, alongside other national sporting events and a surfing summit, has firmly placed Borongan on the map as a top spot for sports and tourism.

Kiteboarding, a sport where riders are propelled across the water on a small surfboard by a large kite, continues to gain popularity and attract enthusiasts worldwide.
