Dengue Cases Surge in Eastern Visayas, Reaching Nearly 15,000

·

The Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas has reported a significant increase in dengue cases, totaling 14,998 infections and 26 fatalities as of the third week of November 2024. This marks a dramatic 279% rise from the 3,953 cases and 9 deaths recorded during the same period last year.

Leyte province leads with the highest number of cases at 4,678, followed by Samar with 3,743, Southern Leyte with 2,661, Eastern Samar with 1,017, Northern Samar with 931, Biliran with 289, Ormoc City with 983, and Tacloban City with 696. Out of the total cases, 10,634 individuals required hospital admission, with the majority being boys aged one to ten.

Despite the high numbers, there was a noted decrease in new cases during the third week of November, with only 64 new cases reported, a 46% drop from the 118 cases the previous week. Jelyn Lopez-Malibago, the DOH-Eastern Visayas information officer, emphasized the need for continued vigilance and preventive measures to curb the spread of dengue.

The DOH has encouraged hospitals to expedite the diagnosis and treatment of suspected dengue cases through fast lanes and has reminded the public to adhere to the ‘5S’ strategy for dengue prevention. This strategy includes searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, taking self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, agreeing to fogging when necessary, and maintaining hydration.

Symptoms of dengue include sudden high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, and in muscles and joints, with some patients also experiencing rashes and bleeding. The DOH has called on local leaders to conduct regular cleanup campaigns to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
