In a significant gathering in Surigao City, nearly 500 farmers and fisherfolk from Surigao del Norte came together for the 2024 Post-State of the Nation Address Forum. The event, orchestrated by the Presidential Communications Office in collaboration with the Philippine Information Agency and the Department of Agriculture in Region 13, focused on the theme ‘Masaganang Agrikultura tungo sa Bagong Pilipinas,’ emphasizing the government’s dedication to enhancing agriculture and fisheries.

The forum served as a platform for sharing the latest in agricultural technology and updates on various government initiatives under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s leadership. Key figures such as Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers, PIA Deputy Director General Adolfo Ares Gutierrez, and DA-13 Regional Director Arlan Mangelen were at the forefront of the event.

Participants like Arnaldo, a seasoned fisherman from Barangay Sabang, expressed appreciation for the support received, including a fiberglass motorized banca from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. He attended the forum to gain insights into new fishing technologies and explore further government assistance for the fishery sector.

Similarly, Felipe, a farmer from Mainit, acknowledged the benefits from the Presidential Assistance for Farmers, Fisherfolk, and Families program. He is keen on expanding his knowledge of vegetable farming to diversify his agricultural activities beyond corn production.

Governor Barbers underscored the province’s commitment to agriculture, highlighting the success of the ‘Bagsakan Center,’ which directly connects local produce to residents, enhancing food security and sufficiency. Mangelen encouraged participants to join DA-accredited associations to streamline access to government services.

Gutierrez emphasized the strategic choice of Caraga as a host for post-SONA activities, reflecting President Marcos’ focus on developing agriculture and fisheries in Mindanao. The forum underscored the administration’s ongoing efforts to empower these sectors through innovative technologies and accessible services.
